Address format and postal-code guide
Five-digit PLZ
Germany uses five numeric digits. Store them as text so a code such as 01067 keeps its initial zero. A city can have many postcodes.
State and postal area
PLZ boundaries are postal delivery areas, not state boundaries. Do not derive a federal state from a simple two-digit prefix rule. Keep the selected city and postcode together.
Address order
A typical delivery line puts the street name before the house number, followed by PLZ and city on the next line. The Bundesland is useful for form filters but is usually omitted from the mailing label.
Practical use cases
- Check state filters using Berlin, Bavaria and Saxony.
- Test leading-zero PLZ values, such as Dresden 01067, through CSV imports.
- Check German characters and street-number placement on checkout and address labels.
Coverage includes every top-level region, with a limited selection of localities. Generated streets and profiles are synthetic; postcode examples do not verify a complete delivery address.
